Review: The Fifth Element ReAction Figures

Posted on August 20, 2015 (January 24, 2022) by Angela
Photo: Gavin Sheehan

One of the biggest films to have an impact on my life was The Fifth Element. It was weird enough and sci-fi enough to capture the imaginations of millions, become a blockbuster hit and eventual cult classic across the globe. … read more

Local Reviews: Veggie Stew

Posted on April 1, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Nü-metal meets butt rock on this thankfully short EP from Veggie Stew.  Crunchy power chords and standard drums play under juvenile raps about partying and ego.  The clichés abound here, so don’t be surprised when you hear the rhyming of “Bacardi” with “party” or lines like “I’m a terror when I flow” from the lead singer.  … read more

Review: Dr. Dre – Compton

Posted on August 19, 2015 (January 24, 2022) by Angela

Compton won’t go down in history as a classic like his other albums, because after all, how much of the ghetto can a 50-year-old billionaire who’s been rich for decades relate to? … read more

Review: Hackers 20th Anniversary Edition

Posted on August 18, 2015 (January 24, 2022) by Angela

Hackers: 20th Anniversary Edition Shout! Factory Release: 08.18   I feel quite privileged to be at the age I’m at, to have been able to see the Internet rise and learn hacking at a time where it only got me suspended from junior high for a week and not arrested (true story). Back then, we

Local Reviews: Zero To Ballistic

Posted on April 1, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Logan-based Zero To Ballistic describe themselves as “modern Paul Reveres with guns at their hips, bullhorns at their lips and instruments at the ready,” and their album reflects this passion for the state of the Union in its revolution-stoking lyrics.  … read more

Local Reviews: Atheist

Posted on March 21, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

I was blown away by this release, straight up. It has everything I love in a hip hop record: rich and dusty beats from classic source material, tight verses by the main emcee and more than a few collaborations.  … read more

Review: Gremlins ReAction Figures

Posted on August 19, 2015 (January 24, 2022) by Angela
Gremlins ReAction Figures – Stripe

To open or not to open? This is the question that divides the toy collecting community. The “to open side” thinks that all action figures should be opened, played with or displayed, as that’s the reason the toy was made, whereas the “don’t open” side likes the toy trapped in its clamshell prison. … read more

Local Reviews: B-Side

Posted on April 1, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

This debut album from B-Side (Bryant Masina) is well produced and his concepts sound fully formed. His cadence flows nicely over the beats, which are just as much R&B and reggae as they are hip hop.  … read more

Review: Leap of Fate

Posted on August 19, 2015 (January 24, 2022) by Angela

The cyberpunk techno-fantasy genre of games like Shadowrun and films like The Matrix is a niche category for sure, but the idea of combining sci-fi and fantasy has always held unlimited storytelling potential, especially in the field of video games. … read more
