Mono
Having just released their sixth full-length album, For My Parents, and on the eve of the Salt Lake City stop of their current U.S. tour, Japan’s instrumental powerhouse MONO were kind enough to take a few minutes to talk to SLUG via email to give us some insight into the band, their new album, and everything in-between. … read more

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company Presents Four @ The Rose Wagner 09.20
The Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company has opened its 2012/2013 season on a bittersweet note with Four. This show marks the official countdown to the exit of artistic director Charlotte Boye-Christensen. This scheduled departure gives the company and Salt Lake City an opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the tremendous creativity and personal commitment Boye-Christensen has brought to local dance over the last decade, while she is still with us in her capacity as director. Still, it’s hard not to hear a ticking clock set the cadence for the various pieces that comprise this show. The challenge this production offers, then, is that of maintaining a cool attitude regarding the passage of time. … read more

Saturday night, In The Venue hosted the “10 Years of Perseverance” tour, celebrating a decade in the big business by hardcore kings Hatebreed. WRD: Midnight Terror vs. Rat City 09.23

Battle of the Bands Benefit @ Food & Care Coalition,...
Friday’s Battle was organized and hosted by the Food & Care Coalition to benefit their Provo facility that not only feeds over 100,000 people every year, but also provides those in need with showers, laundry, haircuts, job-seeking services and even chiropractic care. An organization that started as a group of local public officials, religious leaders and regular citizens who were concerned about the lack of services for Utah County’s homeless and low-income populations, the Coalition’s main focus is not only to feed these individuals, but to help them get on their feet with a myriad of services. This was the Center’s second year putting on such an event, following the success of last year’s edition. … read more
Intro: David Williams in a Dramatic Light
Salt Lake Americana songwriter David Williams will find himself in a different spotlight this month as the star of the dramatic film, Intro. The latest cinematic creation from director Brandon Cahoon will be one of the featured films heading into the 2012 Salt Lake City Film Festival. Cahoon had fallen in love with the idea of living with a musician and figuring out what makes them tick. Rather than do the traditional documentary style, he envisioned creating a dramatic film with Williams as the musical star. … read more
You Are What You Do: 10 Years of Boing!
There’s one in every neighborhood: a house that young, wild-looking people wander in and out of at all hours of the day and night. Boing!, an anarchist collective house in Salt Lake City, is one of these to be sure. Unlike my neighbors’ place that exists exclusively as an unvacuumed, dimly lit diazepam den, the folks at Boing! (with the requisite exclamation point) are busy making shit happen—real positive, feel-good shit—and they want to change your life. … read more

Before their stop in Salt Lake, SLUG spoke with Willis about the band’s current state of affairs. … read more
Matteo: Blending Eastern and Western Styles in SLC
When a band says they play “folk” music, you probably imagine them sitting around in a circle playing banjos, acoustic guitars and violins. For local band Matteo, though, their foreign-sounding name hints that something is different about the instruments they use. Matteo blends traditional Asian instruments with more common, American folk instruments. Throw in some nice vocal harmonies, and you get Matteo’s unique sound, which is unlike anything else coming from other local bands. … read more
