SLUG had the chance to chat with Cut Copy’s bassist Ben Browning about their upcoming world tour, in which Salt Lake City will be their second stop, and how they landed True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård to lead in their new music video. “We’re really interested in cults, hippie culture and rave culture of the ’80s and early ’90s,” says Browning. “The idea of a cult that listens to Cut Copy music had been an idea for a video of ours for a while.” … read more
Which Witch is Which: A Pagan Panel at Crone’s Hollow
Under last Tuesday evening’s brilliant waning moon, the magical emporium on S. Main Street, Crone’s Hollow, opened its doors to the public for “Which Witch is Which,” a panel discussion featuring about a dozen representatives from different realms of Salt Lake’s pagan subculture. … read more
Widowspeak @ Urban Lounge 10.26 with Big Wild Things, Pure Bathing Culture
Having been described as “cowboy grunge,” Widowspeak quilt together classic Americana with darker rock and roll touches. Their Northwest background seems to add a very ’90s texture to their music. It was a bit alarming to me that there were only 30 people at most there to witness what was sure to be a glorious set. I overcompensated my excitement with cranberry vodkas and spilled one all over the floor during the first opener, Big Wild Things. … read more

Nerd Alert: Literary Death Match Makes Its Rounds at The State Room
Founder of the Literary Death Match, Adrian Todd Zuniga, has transformed the idea that literary readings are reserved for the high brow and dull by creating a reading competition that pits local authors against each other to face head to head. The State Room was an excellent choice of venue with ample seating and ease of visibility, and as the booze flowed, the authors took their stance in the corners to meet their opponents. Four authors, three judges, two rounds and an epic finale. Let’s get ready to rumble! … read more
The Lucky 13 Challenge: Hopscotch Outreach Arts Foundation Meats Its Fate
Ten burgers, mammoth beef towers the size of a human head, were carried gingerly on trays to our table at the bar and grill, Lucky 13. Last Wednesday evening this moment marked the beginning of the Lucky 13 Challenge, which had begun for five members of Hopscotch Outreach Arts Foundation, a new non-profit organization that empowers at-risk and underprivileged youth by harnessing their creative spirit in music, art, dance and film. … read more
Ring Rats Anonymous: UCW-Zero TV Taping @ UCW Arena 11.02
This weekend, the (posthumous) Halloween spirit of mirth and trickery hung thick over the ring at the UCW-Zero Arena. In the crowd, I spotted a hunchback, a few princesses, a very convincing King Diamond and even a Mankind/Mick Foley costume. Wrestling fans have always liked pageantry, and that’s what they got this weekend! … read more
RAMP Bamboozle!
On Saturday, November 2, RAMP Sports in Park City escorted all things snow to the forefront of our thoughts. The Bamboozle, as it’s called, is an eclectic mix of art, music, food and delicious red, red wine (with beer sprinkled in for color). The event featured a gigantic Yeti (think Bigfoot) at the entrance so any excuse for not finding it wouldn’t fool anyone. … read more

EDM Pillow Talk: An Interview with Borgore
“I think what makes a good artist is not classifying yourself under one genre. I’ve made a lot of house records and I’m kind of trying to be able to do everything. I think that’s the future. Being a true musician is having no boundaries in art,” says Borgore. … read more
Film Review: Sunset Strip
From the days of Mickey Cohen and the Wars of the Sunset Strip to the riots of the mid-’60s, the Strip has always attracted creative types: rock stars, writers, coke heads, mobsters and prostitutes—and John Belushi, who was all of those things at once. … read more
Salt Lake Welcomes the Winter Market
Last winter the Downtown Salt Lake City Farmers Market held pop-up markets as a solution to the winter funk. They were enjoyable monthly events held at various places downtown where you could stock up on local goodies and get your food truck fix, but the strong demand for a year-round market warranted a better solution: The Winter Farmers Market at the Rio Grande Depot. … read more
