Localized is a monthly showcase of local music founded by SLUG Magazine in 2001 as a way to spotlight local artists and musicians. Localized genres vary from metal to bluegrass to hip-hop and everything in between, even featuring comedy and drag performances. Localized: Wildcat Strike and The New Electric Sound
Starting with the crunchy licks of everyman band The Pentagraham Crackers, SLUG Localized will heat up with the running beats and toothed refrains of Wildcat Strike before surf-rockers The New Electric Sound cast their net of sensual grooves over every man and woman in the crowd. Five dollars can get you a number of things, but only one night a month does it get you access to a live show with three of Salt Lake’s best up-and-comers. Indie surf-rockers Beachmen will be opening for the mind-expanding Polytype, followed by the party rock of King Niko. It’s all going down Friday, July 12, at Urban Lounge at 10 p.m., brought to you by Bohemian Brewery. Localized: The Insurgency and Hectic Hobo
This month’s Localized, on June 15, showcases two hard-rocking groups of completely different spectrums. Salty old-school punkers The Insurgency and dusty vagabond gypsies Hectic Hobo will share the stage and are sure to generate two sets you can easily jerk your limbs to. To round out the evening, indie-blues cross-pollinators The Red on Black will be opening. Per usual, the event is 21+ at Urban Lounge, free until 10:30 p.m. then $5 at the door. Right here in the saltiest city, we’re swimming with young, local talent—and Spy Hop Productions has booked an all-ages Localized showcase for April, featuring three local bands comprised of talented under-agers. Indie synth-pop from Solarsuit and math rock from Anthropology will be present, as well as opening band Creature Double Feature. February’s Localized highlights two of Salt Lake’s most punishing punk bands—Chainwhip and Filth Lords. While the bands vary stylistically—with Filth Lords incorporating pop- and street-punk elements, and Chainwhip crushing skulls with hints of black and death metal brushed over the top of D-beat crust—this show promises to be an all-around ornery affair, with Year of the Wolf kicking things off at The Urban Lounge, 241 S. 500 E., on Friday, Feb. 8.
