Review: Corpsessed – Abysmal Thresholds

Posted on February 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

This album, the first full-length from this Finnish death metal band, is just unrelentingly brutal. Songs travel the gradient between suffocating sludge and insane tempo, with some sporadic keyboard elements that soften certain moments without sacrificing the horrific atmosphere. … read more

Review: Cryogenic Echelon – Taste of Failure

Posted on February 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

It bridges boundaries, and various types of music lovers will find it appealing. I will most certainly be mixing “Fall of the Reptiles (Grendel Remix)” into my set lists at the club—it’s perfect for the transition from synth pop to industrial. … read more

Review: Culted – Oblique to All Paths

Posted on February 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Oblique to All Paths sounds like a musical rendition of a passive-aggressive argument at band practice. Embarrassingly self-indulgent and lacking any kind of major, defining characteristic, Culted end up writing the doom metal equivalent of cold oatmeal.  … read more

Review: Creative Adult – Psychic Mess

Posted on March 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Creative Adult Psychic Mess Run For Cover Street: 02.25 Creative Adult = Mayyors + Gray Matter + The Vibrating Antennas Imagine the sound of an ’80s goth-influenced group that you can’t place between punk and new wave. Now, if you can imagine dropping the needle on their LP, coated with a fine layer of mud,

Review: Crucifixion Machine – ON3

Posted on March 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

His creativity combines darkwave, synthpop and electro-industrial. He uses vocal samples instead of singing, which is one of my favorite styles of music. I feel it allows your mind to wander where it needs to go without imposing a lyrical meaning to the songs. … read more

Review: Craft Spells – Nausea

Posted on April 30, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

With a record label that fosters the likes of Wild Nothing and Beach Fossils, it’s expectable that most Craft Spells compositions will be aimed toward the average pop-loving introvert. … read more

Review: Conan – Blood Eagle

Posted on May 13, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Conan’s second LP, Blood Eagle, is as deliberate and brutal as its namesake—a method of execution mentioned in Norse legends. … read more

Review: Corrosion of Conformity – IX

Posted on June 3, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

This is the Corrosion of Conformity I grew up on—equal parts jam and technicality, and catchy as hell. … read more

Posted on June 4, 2014 (May 11, 2023) by Asha Pruitt
Album cover for The Double EP - A Sea of Split Peas by Courtney Barnett.

Like a collection of Cheever shorts cut to Lou Reed, this “Double EP” features the most invigorating songwriting since Joni Mitchell’s Blue.  … read more
