Flying Lotus @ Urban Lounge 10.19 with Teebs, Jeremiah Jae
It was another slightly bitter cold night in Salt Lake City, winter was settling in and we are just getting used to it. The energy in the air hinted that there was something special happening tonight, and that something special was Flying Lotus. … read more
The xx @ The Complex 10.16 with 2:54
The xx have been a consistent favorite on the ol’ iPod since approximately 2008, when I happened upon their video for “VCR,” which at the time had a meager amount of views. Since then, they have exploded ferociously into the hip music hemisphere and when it became public knowledge that they would be playing here in Salt Lake, I couldn’t go anywhere in the city without hearing their name dropped. … read more
Lord Huron and Night Moves @ Kilby Court 10.19.12
With sounds similar enough to make sense of them touring together, Night Moves and Lord Huron displayed great differences in what were both memorable performances. For Night Moves, it was a fun and slightly awkward night of getting to know their Salt Lake fans. For Lord Huron, it was a night of redemption. … read more
Crystal Castles with HEALTH and Kontravoid @ In The Venue...
People lost their shit when Crystal Castles came out. It was like Beatlemania, but instead of young innocent girls, it was a bunch of dudes who looked like they were in a shitty Cold Cave cover band. As soon as the first song began it was clear who was the star of the show. … read more
Add a Dash of Local Art: Courtney Blair
We are excited to announce that Add a Dash of Local Art is growing! October marked the first month of Add a Dash of Local Art at the Whole Foods Sugar House store, welcoming Courtney Blair and her beautifully designed gig posters to their walls. Expanding Add a Dash of Local Art strengthens our outreach to the community, giving us the opportunity to highlight more of the talent within our great state. … read more
Legend of Aahhh’s Film Review
Endless pristine snowscapes flow languidly over jagged, ominous mountain cliffs as bat-shit powder hounds blast along fifty-plus-foot drops at a breakneck pace. However, I’m not sure that any words in my vocabulary could properly encompass the mind-bending shots that Greg Stump and the gang have brought once again to theaters near you. … read more
Beehive Spirits Film Review
For only being a 30-minute documentary, this film does a great job cramming the history of booze in the state of Utah, as well as highlighting what’s going on in the present day. … read more
Amy Goodman @ The Rose Wagner 10.29.12
I was in a room full of liberals. They all probably listen to RadioActive after Democracy Now!, but when was the last time they were really politically engaged? When was the last time they handed out literature or questioned their own political perspective? This was the message Amy Goodman left us with—to demand change, to make change—not to wait for it. … read more
Deep Love @ The Rose Wagner 10.30
With the recommendation to wear funeral attire, I felt it appropriate to give some holiday cheer a go, and decided to attend this rock opera based around a cemetery theme. Before the entertainment began, producers Ryan Hayes and Garrett Sherwood started with a brief disclaimer for the audience, informing us to react to the performance as you would a rock concert. Since most of us probably did not know what to expect from the show, this proved to be efficient in getting the crowd to appropriately respond with cheers, whoops and whistles throughout the evening. … read more
Converge: Honestly Aimed Arrows
“Every new record should be the best possible version of your band.” Jacob Bannon—artist, label owner and Converge vocalist—has taken time out of his day to talk to me about his band’s new album, All We Love We Leave Behind. “I’ve always held the idea that if you’re making art, then the next thing you do should be a new step forward for you. I want to push things further and become a more cohesive artist and more successful in some way.” … read more
