Localized is a monthly showcase of local music founded by SLUG Magazine in 2001 as a way to spotlight local artists and musicians. Localized genres vary from metal to bluegrass to hip-hop and everything in between, even featuring comedy and drag performances. The event is sponsored by Riso-Geist and typically takes place at Kilby Court. Read SLUG Mag’s interviews with past and present Localized performers below!
Localized: Heartless Breakers
This month’s Localized will feature the heavy-hitting, poetic antics of Sights, followed by the addictive melodies of Larusso and Heartless Breakers headlining the show. Localized: Porch to Porch
Porch to Porch are an upbeat, folky bluegrass ensemble with fast-picking fingers and a wailing harmonica. They live by their motto, “For the love of music,” which harmonica player and designer Willus Branham penciled into their band logo five years ago. Localized: Six Feet in the Pine
This month’s Localized is going to be one hell of a musical showdown. Porch to Porch will heat up the stage with their wild riffs, foot-tapping harmonica and bending elbows. The night will end in a Western frenzy by Six Feet in the Pine, who aren’t your average church-goin’ folk, though they’re serious cowboys, strummers and pluckers. Stop by Urban Lounge May 15 at 10 p.m. for just $5.
Localized: Better Taste Bureau
If hip-hop in Salt Lake is something you’ve never experienced, look no further than April’s Localized, sponsored by Uinta Brewing Co., KRCL 90.9 FM and Spilt Ink SLC. This month’s lineup is solid through and through, starting with Swell Merchants and the Dine Krew, who will lay some groovy tracks down to get you hyped for Better Taste Bureau. You might just find yourself jumping up and down to their fresh flow. As always, $5 gets you in, so load up the van and get down to Urban Lounge, Saturday, April 18 at 10 p.m.

It’s not unusual for a group of teenagers to spend long stretches of time in their parents’ basement, eating ramen noodles and staring at some sort of a screen while vaguely recognizable jams bump in the background. Generally, these hangouts don’t equate to much other than high scores on Mario Kart, but Dine Krew took their adolescent experiments and ideas and painted that shit gold, so to speak. … read more

Localized: Mooninite
This month’s Localized is going to be an auditory treat. Starting off the night, Blade will open with some killer ambient improv soundscapes. Expect to get groovy with the chiptune, foot-working sounds of RS2090. The night will end in a crescendo of intricate loops and craftily selected samples by master of sound Mooninite. Localized: Valerie Rose Sterrett
Art is created in a myriad of ways. Some create from a place of joy and others from a place of darkness. Such is the way with musician Valerie Rose Sterrett. SLUG sat down with Sterrett and her husband/bandmate/artist B.C. over coffee one rainy evening. Immediately upon introducing myself to the two, I could sense the same intense emotions that were portrayed in the album Monsteria permeated from Sterret’s being. Calm, collected and seemingly reserved, Sterrett is a woman with some pretty forward ideas.
