Localized is a monthly showcase of local music founded by SLUG Magazine in 2001 as a way to spotlight local artists and musicians. Localized genres vary from metal to bluegrass to hip-hop and everything in between, even featuring comedy and drag performances. The event is sponsored by Riso-Geist and typically takes place at Kilby Court. Read SLUG Mag’s interviews with past and present Localized performers below!
Localized: Charles Ellsworth
This month’s Localized, on April 18, will feature a mysterious hodgepodge of sincerity. Crook and the Bluff will start off the set with western-tinged psych-blues, after which blues crooning, working man rocking, badass motherfuckers Vincent Draper and the Dirty Thirty will sexy your face off. Following, mustachioed and chocolate-voiced singer-songwriter and strum-master Charles Ellsworth will finish things off. This delicious treat begins at 10 p.m. at Urban Lounge, $5 for those 21+. March Localized features an orgy of electric sound on March 15 at 9 p.m. The sultry, blues-rock sounds of Merchant Royal will massage things into action before we get a little horny (that’s a trumpet joke) with energetic, brass-infused ska-punkers Bombshell Academy. Once we’re hot and bothered, MiNX will hit the stage for an audio-visual mixtape that might leave your shorts a little moist—bring cigarettes for after. Localized: Gnawing Suspicion
This month’s Localized is a meeting of veterans of Salt Lake’s original punk scene and the new breed of local soundsters creating their own musical voice—the experimental, dub-influenced Muzzle Tung open. The Guard Cats have existed barely a year, but they display a diverse sonic palette. On the other end of the continuum, Gnawing Suspicion was one of the first Salt Lake punk bands coming out of the mid-’80s.
